Media Diet, December 2023

A roundup of noteworthy things I’ve played, read, listened to, or watched over the last few weeks.

๐Ÿ“บ Star Trek: Discovery: Season 2 โ€” Hoo boy, that was way, way too much. Everything was on fire, all the time, all at once, everything was at stake yadda yadda yadda. I think if it had 5-10 story arcs less the season would’ve been better. I’ve realized once again that Disco is not made for me, and that’s okay. On the upside, I finally got to see “proto-Pike”, which answered some question I had when watching ST:SNW. ๐Ÿ––

๐Ÿ“บ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Season 1 โ€” D and I are finally watching it on TV, together, one episode a week. It was new for her but not for me. She’ll never be a Trek fan like me, still, we’re both enjoying it. Good times! ๐Ÿ––

๐Ÿ“บ Doctor Who, 60th Anniversary Specials โ€” It was great seeing David Tennant and Catherine Tate together again! The whole “we have two Doctors now” thing, thoughโ€ฆ It reeks of MCU and spin-offs, and I do not like that. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the whole Whoniverse but (to me) the major appeal is that every two or three years, there’s an entirely new cast and a new spin on the old concept. We’ll see.

Internationale Legion der Ukraine: “Ich bin komplett alleine hier als Deutscher. Komplett allein” | ZEIT ONLINE (full article) โ€” “A mover from Brandenburg. A student from Ohio. An activist from Belarus. Three men fight against Russia in Ukraine. Why are they putting their lives at risk?" German-language article about international volunteers fighting for Ukraine against the Russian invasion. Really good, intense read. If you have a way to translate it into your language, I recommend reading it.

๐ŸŽค Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark โ€” He is still bitingly good, but is becoming increasingly friendly/ loving/ mellow with every new album. I like that. The part about his deceased partner made me tear up. Oof.

๐ŸŽฎ CONTROL โ€” Re-play on the Xbox. Still sooo good. Style, sound, gameplay, story, everything clicks! Remedy killed it with this game. The Oldest House is one of my happy places. (I might be weird.)

๐Ÿ“บ For All Mankind: Season 1 & 2 โ€” Hot damn, such a good mix of alternate history, personal drama & stories, and NASA punk. What a timeline!

๐Ÿ“บ Spice Girls: How Girl Power Changed Britain โ€” I stumbled into this 3-part documentary about the pop group (kids, ask your parents), and it was really interesting, even though I never was a big fan. But for a time, they were inescapable, so it was a nice history lesson. Did you know Eddie Murphy had a child with Melanie B but for months denied it was his, until she proved it with a DNA test? I didn’t. TBH, I lost a bit of respect for him there.
